I’ve been on my smoothie kick for breakfast for some time now. I’m always changing them up, to keep my breakfast exciting. When you have trouble with eggs, you have to come up with things that will fill you up for breakfast and also have enough protein in them. Here’s a smoothie that I love lately, Dark Chocolate Almond Smoothie with hints of hazelnut.

It’s so delicious! Plus, if you want, it’s actually perfect for a healthier dessert. Either way, this will leave you feeling satisfied and full. It will also give you the energy you need for the day ahead.

Make this as a smoothie bowl

This Dark Chocolate Almond Smoothie can easily be made as a smoothie bowl. Fairly thick in texture, it would work pretty well as the recipe is written. However, you can also choose to use more yogurt in place of the milk or dairy free milk. This will give it a thicker texture for that bowl option.

Then you can come up with all sorts of great toppings for it! Chopped almonds, blueberries, dark chocolate shavings or pieces would make great toppings.

When serving in a glass ~ how about a creative rim?

Although totally not necessary, it’s exciting to do a fun rim or garnish for the glass. I chopped up chocolate and toasted almonds to make the rim here.

To do the side garnish, add a few drops of water to the edge prior to pouring your smoothie in. Then just roll the glass in the chopped nuts and chocolate on a small plate. Pour your Dark Chocolate Smoothie in, and top with whipped cream or yogurt for a pretty top, followed by more chopped chocolate and almonds.

Toppings for your smoothie or smoothie bowl

Fresh flowers would be beautiful on this. Just confirm they are edible first. I like to grow my own edible flowers or use organic from the store. Then you can just gently rinse them and dry thoroughly before adding to the top of your glass or bowl.

I also love to add freeze dried raspberries or berries to the top for a pretty burst of color and flavor. Check out Trader Joe’s Freeze Dried Raspberries Unsweetened or Unsulfured for a great choice. They also make a mixed berry variety or find this 3 pack on Amazon: Trader Joe’s Freeze Dried Fruit Variety Pack (Blueberry, Strawberry, Raspberry).

Unsweetened coconut is another great topping. It also adds more fiber to your smoothie. I love adding it oatmeal or yogurt for some additional texture.
